Travel to Iceland

An island of 100,000 square km in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean that receives more than 2 million tourists each year. How to get to Iceland? Most will answer by plane, but it is not your only option! Join us in our article to discover the fastest and cheapest way.

We want to make an important note that you may be interested in saving. Every person entering Iceland can bring, duty-free, a maximum of 3 kg of food, not to exceed €160. Meat products can only be imported if they have been boiled or canned. And for smokers, you can “only” carry 200 cigarettes.

How To Get To Iceland By Plane

Iceland tour guide

Well yes, we already revealed what we all thought, getting to Iceland by plane is the fastest and cheapest way of all, just like in most countries. We also tell you that it is a small airport but with perfect logistics, both for arrivals and departures.

There are many international flight companies that operate at Keflavik airport but we mainly focus on knowing how to get to Iceland from Spain. Among all, we recommend Vueling, Iberia, or Norwegian Airlines.

It is very important to keep in mind that the only possible Spanish airports are Madrid, Barcelona, and Alicante. In addition, direct flights between these two countries are only offered in spring and summer. If you want to go in winter, you can make a stopover in London, Berlin or Copenhagen.

The flight time is about 4 hours and a half. The minimum price, a priori, that it will cost you to get to Iceland from Spain is €150 if you buy it well in advance (3 months). Honestly, also consider the option of making a stopover in London for 2-3 hours, just like us, it will help you lower the total price.

How To Get To Iceland From South America

If you are in South America and want to get to Iceland, you have two options.

Fly to New York and take a second plane to Keflavik which takes 6 hours. Or land directly in London and after a short stopover, arrive in Iceland. The first option is perhaps a little cheaper, although both are around €450 if you buy tickets in advance.

How To Get From Iceland Airport To Reykjavik

Iceland International Airport, where your plane will land, is located in Keflavik, 50 kilometers from the country’s capital. If the first stop of your trip is there, you will urgently need to know how to get from Iceland airport to Reykjavík because there are cheap options but be careful because some are very expensive.

Rental car

Let’s get to the point if you want to tour Iceland and your first night is not in Reykjavík, rent a car at the airport and start discovering directly what is most worthwhile about the island, its landscapes.

We think that it is not worth renting a car to go to Reykjavík and spend the night there. It is better to rent it the next day or when you leave the capital because it will help you save.

FlyBus buses

Without a doubt, it is your ideal option if you want to go from Iceland airport to Reykjavík. The price of FlyBus is €22 and the journey takes between 40 and 50 minutes because it is direct. The highlight is that this bus waits in front of the airport 35 minutes after each plane lands. Buy the ticket at your private box office in the arrivals terminal.

You can also get to the capital of Iceland with a public bus, number 55, for a lower price, €12. Of course, the tour lasts about 90 minutes.

Cab

€120, yes, you read that right, €120 to go from Iceland airport to Reykjavik! Honestly, unless you’re loaded, don’t consider this option.

How To Get To Iceland By Ferry

It is probably a very remote option, but it is still one more possibility that the island offers. The European ports that connect with the east of Iceland, in Seydisfjördur more specifically, are Denmark, Norway, the Faroe Islands, or Shetland. The price must be overwhelming, but you could get there with your car or motorhome.

If you are interested in doing this tour of at least 40 hours in the middle of the sea, look for more information at the companies Smyril Line Norröna or Eimskip.

How To Get To Iceland By Cruise

Although it seems unreal, cruises that reach Iceland have become fashionable. There are currently several offers connecting Norway, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland on the same circuit. This will prevent you from fully exploring the island but is a good alternative if you don’t like or are afraid of flying.
